Colic and Chiropractic

May 3, 2010 by Dr. Johnson

Colic

Your tummy hurts. You have a terrible headache. You can’t sleep and you’re cranky. One more thing: you can’t ask for help because you’re only two weeks old! So you cry. And cry. And cry.

And your parents feel helpless.

Indigestion?
Infantile colic was first thought to be merely indigestion. The most widely accepted definition of colic today is “unexplainable and uncontrollable crying in babies from 0 to 3 months old, more than 3 hours a day, more than 3 days a week for 3 weeks or more, usually in the afternoon and evening hours.”
Birth Trauma?

If a baby is inconsolable, it’s hard to know if it’s a digestive disturbance. Consider another explanation. Upon examination, chiropractors often find spinal distortions in the baby’s upper cervical spine. These babies are probably suffering from a raging headache and neck pain. This is especially common if there was a difficult birth.

A 93% Success Rate

In a South African study by Mercer and Cook, thirty infants diagnosed with colic were randomly divided into two groups. One group received chiropractic care while the other group did not. Within a two-week period, the chiropractic care group saw a complete resolution of symptoms in 93% of the infants.

A 94% Success Rate

A Danish study (Klougart et al., 1989) looked at the effects of chiropractic care with colicky infants. Their published report indicated that 94% of parents saw improvement in their baby’s behavior within two weeks of beginning care.

Not a Cure

But chiropractic isn’t a treatment for colic! If subluxation is present, interfering with the proper function of any part of the body, restoring proper nervous system control allows the body to heal. This can happen regardless of age and regardless of what the symptoms are called.

Put an end to the sense of frustration and helplessness so many new parents feel.

Carpal Tunnel and Chiropractic

May 3, 2010 by Dr. Johnson

Carpal Tunnel

Carpal tunnel problems are a common effect of repetitive motions to abnormally functioning joints of the spine, arm and wrist.

Chiropractic techniques that work so well with the spine can be applied to other joints in the body. Virtually every joint is susceptible to fixations and malfunctions that impair function and range of motion. Trauma, micro-traumas, vibrations and repetitive motions are often culprits.

The Tunnel

The carpal tunnel is a band of ligaments and small bones in your wrist. Painful symptoms can result when nerves are compressed by a collapse of this nerve “tunnel.”

The Spine

Many are surprised to learn that the cause of their wrist problem may be due to functional changes to one or more joints of the neck, shoulder, elbow or wrist. Subluxations in the upper spine can compromise the workings of any structure between it and the tip of your littlest finger. This is often called the double crush syndrome.

Other Extremities

Shoulders, hip problems, knees, ankles and even the jaw problems have been shown to respond to chiropractic care. Find out before resorting to drugs or irreversible surgery!

Chiropractic First

It just makes sense to take the more conservative approach first: chiropractic first, drugs second and surgery last! Schedule a consultation with an Association member chiropractor near you and find out what safe and natural chiropractic can do for you.

Chiropractors approach these cases with sensitivity and compassion.

Bedwetting and Chiropractic

May 3, 2010 by Dr. Johnson

Bedwetting

Bedwetting takes a tremendous toll on children. Embarrassment. Alarms. No sleepovers. Plastic mattress covers. Frustration. Unable to fit in. Even the shame of diapers.

Up to the age of four or five, most children have poor bladder control at night. But after that, the inability to stay dry is a sign of an underlying problem. While chiropractic is not a treatment for bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis), countless children have been helped with safe and natural chiropractic care.

Bladder Physiology

Two key muscles control the emptying of the bladder. Their technical names are the detrusor and trigone muscles. Nerves that exit the spinal column in the lower back and sacrum control these muscles.

During the early years of life, the sacrum has five separate segments. Later, they fuse together to form the triangular-shaped bone that adults have at the base of the spine. If these segments misalign (falling, learning to walk, ride a bike, etc.) they can compromise the nerves that are responsible for bladder control.

Chiropractors look for these sometimes-subtle misalignments during a thorough examination. When these misalignments are reduced with safe and natural chiropractic adjustments, nervous system control and regulation of the bladder is often restored.

Published Research

The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics document many studies showing the positive benefits of chiropractic care.

  • A study of 46 children received chiropractic care for a 10-week period. A quarter of those receiving chiropractic care had 50% or more reduction in the wet night frequency, while none among the control group saw a reduction. (JMPT 1994 (Nov-Dec);17 (9): 596-600 )
  • Children with a history of persistent bed-wetting received eight chiropractic adjustments. Number of wet nights fell from seven per week to four. (JMPT 1991 (Feb);14 (2): 110-115)
  • The lumbar spine of an eight-year-old male bed wetter was adjusted once and at a one-month follow-up. There was a complete resolution of enuresis. “This happened in a manner that could not be attributed to time or placebo effect.” (JMPT 1994 (Jun);17 (5): 335-338)

Will Chiropractic Care Help?

Since chiropractic isn’t a treatment for bedwetting, a thorough examination is necessary. If the bedwetting is caused by nerve interference from the spine, many children see great results with chiropractic care. Find out!

Chiropractors approach these cases with sensitivity and compassion. Your son or daughter will appreciate and understand the explanations of a chiropractor.

Back Pain and Chiropractic

May 3, 2010 by Dr. Johnson

Back Pain

Pain of any kind is a sign something’s wrong. Some people silence the pain with drugs. But that would be like removing the battery to quiet a smoke detector!

smoke detector
Two Common Causes

The nerve-rich facet joints on the back side of each spinal bone are a common cause of back pain. The pain can be a sign that these interlocking “fingers” aren’t moving properly.

The discs between spinal bones can be involved, too. Trauma can cause the soft, pulpy material in the middle to bulge, putting pressure on nearby nerves.

Your Choices

Dr. Johnson has helped many people with safe and natural chiropractic care. Other choices include:

Ignore it  (Spinal problems worsen.)
Bed rest  (Prolongs the problem.)
Therapy  (Stresses malfunctioning joints.)
Medicine  (Covers up the problem.)
Surgery  (Drastic. Risky. Ineffective.)

Chiropractic Works

Specific chiropractic adjustments can help the spine “right itself.” By restoring the way your spine works, nerve involvement is reduced, pain eases and the body can heal.

Auto Accidents and Chiropractic

May 3, 2010 by Dr. Johnson

Auto accident.

Don’t be misled by the minimal damage to your car. People react much differently than glass, plastic and metal!

It started with a routine trip to the store.

Suddenly you hear a screeching of tires and the harsh sound of metal hitting metal. In the split second before you can brace yourself, you feel your car moving from some unseen force!

Hidden Damage

It’s tempting to minimize your own injuries because your car has sustained little or no damage. Research shows that occupants can be injured considerably more than what you’d expect from a dented fender or a broken taillight.

The Medical Solution

If you visit the emergency room, you may be given a clean bill of health because you don’t have any broken bones. You might get a prescription to reduce the muscle spasms caused by structural changes in your neck or lower back.

But you don’t have a drug shortage! After what you’ve been through, you’ll need a health professional that truly understands soft tissue injuries, spinal biomechanics and rehabilitation strategies. Call a chiropractor!

We Can Help

Whether it was a little incident in the parking lot, or two cars attempting to occupy the same space in an intersection, you need a professional who knows how to work with lawyers and insurance companies.

If you’ve been in a car accident, locate an Association member chiropractor near you. Chiropractors successfully help car accident victims all the time. It’s practically routine.

Common Questions

Q: Why do I have pain in my arms and hands?

A: Because the nerves to the arms and hands exit the spine through the injured area of the neck, numbness and tingling are common. Even lower back pain can result directly from the trauma, or as a reaction to the loss of proper spinal curves.

Q: Why did my headaches start more than a week after my accident?

A: Whether you’ve been in an accident, stressed at work, or over-exerted yourself in the garden, your body is constantly adapting to the environment. When your capacity to adapt is exhausted, symptoms can appear. This can take days, weeks, months or years to occur.

Q: Will I ever be normal again?

A: Many chiropractic patients report restored spinal curves and an end to their symptoms. Those who delay seeking appropriate care often discover that scar tissue and spinal instability lengthens full recovery and often requires periodic chiropractic checkups.

While in Orange Country on business (from Eastern NC) I developed some pretty significant lower back pain while out on a run- the type of pain that made moving, or sitting, terrible. The idea of sitting in an airplane seat from one side of the country to another was akin to medieval torture. So I hobbled into Doc Johnson's office, was seen promptly. He helped me work out my lower back issue by the end of the week to where sitting in an airplane was bearable. I was across the country from home and needed some help, and he really came through for me. I really appreciate it!
