Sports and Chiropractic

September 7, 2010 by Dr. Johnson

People often ask, “what can Chiropractic offer when it comes to sports injuries?”  It is a common misconception that all chiropractors do is “pop bones” and “fix back pain”. But chiropractic is so much more.

Doctors of Chiropractic spend more time in school focused on the Neuro-Musculo-Skeletal aspect of the body (the part that integrates the connection between the muscles, joints, and nerves) than any other health profession. This makes them highly qualified to help prevent, diagnose, and care for many of the injuries that occur during athletic competition.  Nowadays it is not uncommon to find a chiropractor on the sidelines of a major sporting event, or working behind the scenes at all levels of competition. But the benefits of chiropractic care do not end when ones athletic career is finished.

For most of us a career in professional athletics is not a reality. That however does not keep us from participating in the sports that we love. In many cases these are the people who benefit the most from chiropractic care as they do not have the kind of around the clock care and attention given to a professional athlete. The valiant “Weekend Warrior” who goes out every day or week can cause tremendous damage to the body as they continue to ignore the bodies subtle and not so subtle warning signs “playing through the pain” and may end up in much worse shape than if they had rectified the problem before engaging in activity.

The Doctors at San Clemente’s Chiropractic Center are happy to assist you in reaching your full athletic potential, whether you be an amateur, professional, or just a faithful weekend warrior. You can feel comfortable seeking their care and advice on a wide array of questions like:

-Proper pre-participation warm-up and stretching

-Proper conditioning and physical preparation

-How to avoid injury or re-injury during participation

-Choosing proper equipment for your chosen sport (including the right shoes and apparel)

-Specific problems that should be addressed before return to play and up-to-date return to play guidelines for competition athletes

-Proper nutrition and supplementation specific to your chosen activity

-Tips to help speed recovery following  participation

-Proper pre-participation and post-season screenings to insure safe participation as well as off season rehabilitation and training (Did you know? Doctors of Chiropractic are qualified to perform your Preseason Physical Exam for athletic participation.)

-And any other questions you may have with regards to staying active and healthy

Success Stories – The Schramm Family

August 12, 2010 by Dr. Johnson

The entire Schramm Family, Melissa and her husband, Ed, and her children – Edward, Miranda and Brandi – have all received chiropractic care from Dr. Johnson.  “I have a son who plays hockey, two in kung fu, and an active baby, so it’s very important to have someone treating our family who is good with kids.”  Our medical doctor keeps telling me ‘I don’t know what your chiropractor is doing, but keep doing it.’”

Melissa was introduced to chiropractic services at a very young age due to a knee injury playing soccer in 7th grade.  “At that time” she says “my Grandmother took me to a chiropractor to avoid a serious surgery.”  Melissa found Dr. Johnson through her kids’ teacher.  Her husband’s back hurt to the degree that he couldn’t even go to work.  Their current chiropractor couldn’t manage his physical size easily.   “Dr. Johnson’s sports background and working with large athletes made a big difference to my husband’s comfort and successful treatments.”

Melissa herself has been in several car accidents and had final given up the idea of living free of pain around her neck and shoulders.  “I couldn’t raise my hands above my head.  I couldn’t even brush my hair without pinching a nerve.”  When she felt the beginning of pain, she would limit herself to avoid it.  She gave up sports because of the risk of injury.  The risk of pain wasn’t worth it.

After working with Dr. Johnson, Melissa reports that she doesn’t even think about pain any more.  “I’ve gotten back to where I feel human again after living with intermittent pain for over 16 years.  Even going to other chiropractors never got me the relief I feel now.”

“I highly recommend Dr. Johnson because he’s open and he listens.  He is thorough and checks beyond the immediate problem for solutions.”  Dr. Johnson can adjust anything, not just my back.  One of the messages I send to friends and family is that you don’t have to get hurt to get checked out.  Getting checked out ahead of time avoids misaligning the spine even more.”

Success Stories – Andrew & Ashley Reiley

July 7, 2010 by Dr. Johnson

Ashley, now 24 years old has had back problems since she was 13. “I’ve worked with a lot of chiropractors in the past who temporarily fixed the problem. When I started seeing Dr. Johnson a year ago, it was the first time the problem was really identified. No one had ever x-rayed me before nor taken the time to really understand what was causing the pain.”

“I used ti wake up with such a sore, stiff back, I couldn’t get out of bed,” states Ashely. She missed several high school and college classes plus work as a result. “I love to walk and jog but it was too painful. I couldn’t even plant flowers, which I really enjoy.”

Her husband Andrew, a member of the Marine Corps, experienced problems with his neck and back. Watching Ashley get better and better prompted him to seek Dr. Johnson’s help as well.

What’s special about Dr. Johnson, according to Andrew and Ashley, is that he really cares about his patients. In Ashley’s words, “It seems like most chiropractors’ primary interest is to sell you a package of treatments over a long time.” When I asked Dr. Johnson about his policy, he said “Why am I going to charge you for a large batch of treatments when I don’t know how quickly your body heals. I want to have you come in only when you need to.” “He then worked out a program based on how we progressed with each visit.”

Now in the periodic maintenance phase of their care, Andrew and Ashley enjoy a variety of activities together including walking and jogging around the community. And they always know who to call when they need help.

Myth : Chiropractic Adjustments are Dangerous

June 25, 2009 by Dr. Johnson

Reality:

Chiropractic spinal adjustments are extremely safe when performed by chiropractors. In fact, chiropractic adjustments are among the safest treatments for most back and neck problems. According to a 1993 Ontario Ministry of Health commissioned study,

“There is no clinical or case-control study that demonstrates or even implies that chiropractic spinal manipulation is unsafe in the treatment of low-back pain. Some medical treatments are equally safe, but others are unsafe and generate iatrogenic (doctor-induced) complications for low-back pain patients. Our reading of the literature suggests that chiropractic manipulation is safer than medical management of low-back pain.”

Lead investigator of the study, Pran Manga, Ph.D., however, did warn that spinal adjustments performed by health care professionals other than qualified doctors of chiropractic were potentially harmful and less effective:

“Indeed, several existing medical therapies of low-back pain are generally contraindicated on the basis of the existing clinical trials. There is also some evidence in the literature to suggest that spinal manipulations are less safe and less effective when performed by nonchiropractic professionals.”

On December 8, 1994, the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) of the US Department of Health and Human Services released clinical practice guidelines for the management of acute low back pain. Their guidelines were developed after extensive study of the diagnostic and treatment methods used for acute low back pain. Their findings included:

  • The risk of serious complications from lumbar spinal manipulation is rare;
  • Conservative treatment such as spinal manipulation should be pursued in most cases before considering surgical intervention
  • Prescription drugs such as oral steroids, antidepressant medications and colchicine are not recommended for acute low back problems.

Dr. Johnson has a gift and has helped my husband and me with acute back pain and will squeeze us in to see us at a moments notice. In addition, we have gone on and off for maintenance and never feel pressure to come in more than necessary. He is gentle, personable, kind and very talented. Both my husband and I highly recommend him.

While in Orange Country on business (from Eastern NC) I developed some pretty significant lower back pain while out on a run- the type of pain that made moving, or sitting, terrible. The idea of sitting in an airplane seat from one side of the country to another was akin to medieval torture. So I hobbled into Doc Johnson's office, was seen promptly. He helped me work out my lower back issue by the end of the week to where sitting in an airplane was bearable. I was across the country from home and needed some help, and he really came through for me. I really appreciate it!
